Frequently Asked Questions
-
What Is Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT)®?
Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT)® is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that uses the power of music to address neurologic conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, traumatic brain injury, and other disorders that affect the brain and nervous system.
NMT utilizes 20 music-based techniques that target functional goals in speech, cognition, and sensorimotor domains.
-
How does music therapy help adults and seniors with neurological conditions?
Music therapy stimulates areas of the brain responsible for movement, speech, memory, and emotion. Using specific elements of music triggers brain neuroplasticity, which can help “rewire” the brain, allowing it to rehabilitate, maintain, or learn new skills.
For adults and older adults, it can improve communication skills, enhance motor function, reduce anxiety and depression, and support cognitive rehabilitation.
-
Who Can Benefit From Neurologic Music Therapy ?
- Seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia
- Adults recovering from stroke or brain injury
- Individuals with Parkinson’s disease
- Adults with multiple sclerosis
- Older adults with speech or motor impairments
- Caregivers looking for supportive, non-pharmacologic interventions
-
Is Neurologic Music Therapy Different From Traditional Music Therapy?
Yes. NMT is grounded in neuroscience and focuses on specific clinical outcomes using standardized techniques. It is typically administered by board-certified music therapists with advanced training in neurologic approaches.
-
Do I Need A Referral From A Doctor?
No referral is necessary to start music therapy. However, we welcome collaboration with your healthcare providers to ensure coordinated care.
-
What Happens During A Neurologic Music Therapy Session?
Sessions are personalized and may include rhythmic movement, melodic intonation therapy, vocal exercises, or instrument-based motor training. All interventions are goal-oriented and designed to improve functional outcomes like speech clarity, walking, or memory recall.
-
Do I Need Musical Experience To Participate?
Not at all. No musical talent or background is required. Music therapy is about using music as a therapeutic tool—not performing or learning an instrument.
-
Where Do Sessions Take Place?
We offer in-home services, teletherapy, and in-office sessions depending on your needs and location. We serve clients in Portland, OR and surrounding areas.

Is Music Therapy Covered By Insurance In Oregon?
Music therapy coverage in Oregon varies depending on your insurance provider and plan. While neurologic music therapy (NMT) is a recognized allied health service, it is not universally covered by all insurers.
In Oregon:
Private insurance plans may offer reimbursement for music therapy services when provided by a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC), especially if services are medically necessary and related to a neurologic condition like stroke, Parkinson’s disease, or traumatic brain injury.
Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid) does not currently list music therapy as a covered service. However, we encourage clients to check with their Coordinated Care Organization (CCO), as some may offer supplemental services or alternative therapy coverage.
Medicare does not currently cover music therapy as a standalone service, but it may be included in some Medicare Advantage or long-term care plans.
We are an out-of-network provider. We are happy to supply superbills, session notes, and treatment plans so you can submit for reimbursement if your insurance offers out-of-network coverage.
We strongly recommend contacting your insurance provider directly to ask:
"Is music therapy covered for neurologic conditions?"
"Can I be reimbursed for out-of-network board-certified music therapy services in Oregon?"
"Do I need a referral or prior authorization?"
Still unsure? We can help you navigate the process. Contact us and we’ll walk you through how to check your benefits and submit claims.
